He had been assigned to HQ Sqdn, 8th Air Service Group, and at the time of his disappearance was assigned to the 360 Air Service Group in New Guinea as an Armorer Gunner. On Oct. 9, 1944, his plane and crew took off for their first training flight, and were never heard from again. His plane and crew were recently found in the New Guinea jungle after 61 years. The nine man crew was found due to the efforts of a local villager who found two dog tags belonging to Cpl Pushkar and 2nd Lt Johnson and notified the U.S. Embassy in Port Moresby. Walter received technical training at the gunnery schools at Lowry Air Field (CO) in Nov. 1941, and Henderson Air Field (NV) and Yuma Air Field (AZ) June 1943-Jan 1944.
