"Remember the Promises . . . Remember Our Sacrifices"
The National Convention was held in
Kansas City, Missouri on September 20-24, 2000. Officers elected/appointed:
President - Fred Athans
TREA's members concerns were focused
on the eroding medical benefits. Many letters to the editor were addressing the
"broken promise" issue. An article by Rep Ronnie Shows D-Mississippi was
introduced into congress called "Keep our Promise to America's Military Retirees
Act" (HR2966) Sept 28,'99.
The November Voice on page 27 printed
an article stating the Time Magazine had prepared a list of the 10 most influential people
of the century in each field to mark the end of the century. The 10 most influential
scientists, politicians, entertainers, sports figures, musicians, artists, and
industrialists. This month they published the 10 most influential people (overall) of the
century. They named "the American GI" the most influential person of the
century. It was the only one that is not a single individual.
Pre-Convention BOD Meeting September
19, 2000 in Kansas City, MO
The BANC Committee started seven new
chapters this year, with three ready to charter in the near future. Members of Puyallup,
WA chapter 110 were ready to file suit against TREA if they did not charter. This chapter
as since been chartered and duly installed.
A motion to officially dissolve
Chapter 44 in Conway, AR was carried. In addition Wichita Falls, TX Chapter 109 will be
officially dissolved.
The VSO program announced plans to
work with Iowa and Nevada to bring them on board this year.
1st. Business Meeting September 21,
2000 Kansas City, MO
Mark Olanoff introduced two new
Legislative Affairs Office staff members. Deirdre Parke Holleman and Steven Garrett.
Treasurer Evert reported that $20,000
was allocated to fund an historical project to organize and retain TREA's history. $3,600
was donated to the breakfast held in honor of Medal of Honor recipients. A $25,000
donation to the World War II Memorial was approved by the Board of Directors.
Past National President Otho Lister announced that the VSO program has 43 states signed for a non-financial agreement with TREA and that requests for assistance come to Headquarters every day.
Four chapters were chartered in 2001.
