MINUTES OF 1984 TREA NATIONAL
CONVENTION
July 18, 1984:
The National Convention was held in
Las Vegas, Nevada on July 17-20, 1984. Officers elected/appointed:

Special Information Regarding Chapter
20 Memorial Gardens:
Mr. Gutierrez, responding to a
request for additional information, stated that Chapter 20 had purchased 236 cemetery
plots which were available for eligible members. The dedication will be November 11, 1984.
Mr. Horan continued by asking Chapter
President and Auxiliary President, if applicable, of the following Chapters to come
forward to receive their awards and recognitions on behalf of their Chapters:
Mr. Horan gave a brief description of
each Chapter's accomplishments as the awards were presented by the Founders and Past
Presidents, Mr. Skonce, Mr. Sorell, Mr. Newton, Mr. Grayckowski, Mr. Duden and Mr. Mercer,
respectively.
President Lister presented the Member
of the Year award to Mr. Elias (Leo) Acosta, posthumously, received by Chapter 20
President, Felton Hall.
Past President's Advisory Council
Report:
Historical Program - Mr. Duden
commented on the importance of recording TREA's history and identified some of the sources
- pictures, minutes, people, etc. He announced that TREA began with a treasury of $30 and
the slogan "Unity In Strength". He expressed the need for TREA to have a
historian to record events important to the organization and compile a Special Edition for
the 25th Anniversary of TREA. President Lister expressed that the Board will act on both
the position of historian and the production of a Special Commemorative Edition for the
25th Convention.
Standing Committee Reports:
Scholarship Committee: Mr. Brown
announced that TREA would be granting 15 scholarships at $750 each. He continued that:
(1) He planned to draft a letter to
commissary vendors soliciting funds for the scholarship program.
(2) The scholarship package had been
revised to be implemented May of 1985 with printing completed by September 1st for timely
distribution of the revised scholarship package.
(3) A review committee from George
Washington University had been solicited to review completed applications and make
recommendations regarding final winners.
(4) A Standing Rule has been written
to standardize the scholarship procedures.
Chapter Charter Committee: Mr. Blagg
reported:
(1) The chartering of eight new
Chapter: 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 and 35.
(2) Additional Chapters are also in
the process.
July 19, 1984:
Mr. Weibel introduced Ben Pearson
(Chapter 3) who presented a Certificate of Achievement on behalf of the President of NCOA,
for outstanding service as the President of TREA.
Chapter 31 was formed in Topeka,
Kansas during May, 1984. Chapter 32 was formed in San Antonio, Texas during March, 1984.
Chapter 33 was formed in Lompoc, California on June 6, 1984. Chapter 34 was formed in
Glendale, Arizona during June, 1984. Chapter 35 was formed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire
during July, 1984. Chapter 36 was formed in Destin, Florida during October, 1984. Chapter
37 was formed in Enid, Oklahoma during November, 1984. Chapter 38 was formed in Columbia,
South Carolina during December, 1984.
MINUTES OF MID-TERM BOARD OF
DIRECTORS' MEETING FEBRUARY 16, 1985
President Lister noted that Mr.
O'Connell and the Legislative Representative Committee had recommended Bill Hazelton as
the Legislative Representative. Mr. Hazelton has been hired with the costs being shared
with AGE, space being shared also, and the cost to TREA being $1,000 per month.
Scholarship Committee: Larry Brown
reported:
(1) Scholarship package has been
revised and a brochure developed.
(2) No significant contributions to
date.
(3) Recommendations:
a. Specific amount from membership
dues be designated for fund. b. National Auxiliary support equally. c. Twenty scholarships
be awarded each year.
National Charter Committee: Mr.
Skonce reported that support for a National Charter was more widespread and that the bills
would be reintroduced and given new numbers in the 1985 Sessions.

DIRECTORS' MEETING JULY 24, 1985
Scholarship Report: Mr. Brown stated
the committee at George Washington University reviewed 32 applications and 15 recipients
were selected, the two highest (male and female) being selected for special recognition
awards of the Leo Acosta Award and the Frances Murphy Award, respectively. Five were
selected that met the financial need criteria making a total of 20 recipients of $1,000
each.
